Dell Brings Back XP!

From Cnet News -“Amid significant customer demand, the computer maker said on Thursday that it has returned to offering the older Windows version as an option on some of its consumer PCs.” -cnet news

Some of you may have found in the recent months when buying a computer that you can no longer buy Windows XP with a new computer. your options were limited and you really had to dig for a computer that may not have the greatest specs in order to not have to upgrade to Windows Vista ( Microsoft’s New Operating System).

Why is this important?

Historically whenever Microsoft releases a new Operating System two things happen. 1. Users are expected to be the beta testers that catch all the bugs they couldn’t. 2. It Pro’s will say this without hesitation ” I am waiting until the first Service Pack”.

Why would someone wait for the First Service Pack?

For that answer refer to reason number 1. Basically it boils down to hardware and software that you already purchased; such as printers, scanners, anti virus, personal finance, etc… to not work correctly. You wind up reporting these issues to Microsoft while being entirely in the mean time you wait or return your new computer. These issues are most always fixed in the first service pack which generally has been released in the first 6 – 9 months after initial release. Imagine having a problem with your home you had to wait 6 – 9 months to fix.

Why be a guinea pig for a software company when their existing software (windows XP) works just fine. In truth, Windows vista features have no business benefit at this time. They require enormous hardware upgrades and they do nothing that Windows XP can’t do today for a business applications.

If you have to buy a new computer in the next year before Windows Vista Service pack 1 comes out, I would strongly recommend requesting your vendor install Windows XP.
